Coming Out
A Handbook for LGBTQ Young People
Coming out is when a person decides to reveal an important part of who they are with someone in their life. For many LGBTQ people, this involves sharing their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
Coming out isn’t always easy. After thinking it through, you may decide not to come out. You are valid and deserve support no matter who you do or do not share your identities with. Remember, there isn’t one right way to come out, and it’s YOUR choice.
The Trevor Project’s Coming Out: A Handbook for LGBTQ Young People, is a resource that covers a wide range of topics to support LGBTQ young people in exploring what coming out safely can mean for them. The handbook includes:
Basics of gender: gender identity, gender expression, and transitioning
Basics of sexual orientation: physical attraction, romantic attraction, and emotional attraction
Coming out: planning ahead, testing the waters, environment, support systems, and safety
Healthy relationships, self-care, mental health, and warning signs of negative mental health outcomes such as seriously considering suicide
How To Support Bisexual Youth
Ways to Care for Young People Who Are Attracted to More Than One Gender
Introduction
At The Trevor Project, we’re always working to create a safer world for LGBTQ youth. Our guide on “How to Support Bisexual Youth: Ways to Care for Bisexual, Pansexual, Fluid, and Queer Youth Who are Attracted to More than One Gender” is an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics and best practices for supporting the bisexual youth in your life, which may include yourself! Educating ourselves is an ongoing practice, and how we define and express identity is an ongoing journey. We are all here to learn!
Map Your Own Identity
You can download and print The Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation “Map” and fill it out based on how you personally feel right now. It’s okay to not have everything figured out. It’s also okay if you change your mind and find yourself feeling differently tomorrow, next week, or next year.

College Resources for LGBTQ+ Students
Of the roughly 20 million students attending American colleges and universities, it is difficult to know how many identify as LGBTQ. Coming out to friends and family is a deeply personal issue, and college is a time when many individuals are still exploring their sense of identity. According to a 2013 Pew Survey, 92% of LGBTQ individuals report that society is more accepting of them than it was 10 years ago. This growing acceptance means that college campuses are becoming more welcoming to LGBTQ students, but prospective students should still investigate what resources are available to them at the schools they are considering. This guide will discuss issues specific to gay, lesbian, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, and intersex individuals, along with the challenges they face while enrolled in college. We use the term LGBTQ throughout both for simplicity's sake and because it is the generally accepted term among these communities.
